Enter up to 20 rounds. Your handicap index is calculated from the best 8 of your last 20 score differentials.

Our free golf handicap calculator works out your Handicap Index using the World Handicap System (WHS). Enter your scores along with the course rating and slope rating for each round, and the calculator finds your best 8 differentials from your last 20 rounds.

How to calculate a golf handicap

Under the World Handicap System, your Handicap Index is calculated in three steps:

  1. Calculate the score differential for each round: (Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating) × 113 ÷ Slope Rating
  2. Take your best (lowest) 8 differentials from your most recent 20 rounds.
  3. Average those 8 differentials and multiply by 0.96.

Handicap Index = Average of best 8 differentials × 0.96

What is a score differential?

A score differential measures how well you played relative to the difficulty of the course. It adjusts your gross score using the Course Rating (the expected score for a scratch golfer) and the Slope Rating (a measure of course difficulty for a bogey golfer). The standard slope rating is 113.

What is Course Rating and Slope Rating?

The Course Rating is the expected score for a scratch (0 handicap) golfer on that course under normal conditions — typically a number like 71.4. The Slope Rating measures how much harder the course is for a bogey golfer compared to a scratch golfer. It ranges from 55 to 155, with 113 being the standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a golf handicap index?
A Handicap Index is a numerical measure of a golfer's playing ability calculated under the World Handicap System (WHS). It represents the expected score relative to the course rating on a course with a Slope Rating of 113. A lower index means a better golfer.
How is a golf handicap calculated?
Calculate the Score Differential for each round: (Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating) × (113 ÷ Slope Rating). Then take the lowest 8 differentials from your most recent 20 rounds, average them, and multiply by 0.96 (a 96% factor).
What is Course Rating and Slope Rating?
Course Rating is the expected score for a scratch golfer (0 handicap) under normal conditions. Slope Rating measures the relative difficulty for a bogey golfer compared to a scratch golfer, on a scale from 55 to 155 (with 113 being average). Both values are printed on the scorecard.
What is a good golf handicap?
Handicap ranges vary by skill level. A scratch golfer has a 0 handicap. Single-digit handicaps (1–9) indicate a skilled player. 10–18 is considered average. 19–28 is a higher handicap. The maximum Handicap Index under WHS is 54.0.
How many rounds do I need to establish a handicap?
Under the World Handicap System, you can start with as few as 3 rounds (using the best differential from the first 3). The system adjusts as you play more rounds, with full accuracy reached at 20 rounds.
What is an adjusted gross score?
The adjusted gross score caps the maximum score on any hole at net double bogey (par + 2 strokes + any handicap strokes you receive on that hole). This prevents one very bad hole from unfairly inflating your differential.
