How GPA is Calculated

GPA is calculated by dividing total grade points by total credit hours. Grade points for a course = grade point value × credit hours. For example, a B (3.0) in a 3-credit course earns 9 grade points. If that's your only course, your GPA is 9 ÷ 3 = 3.0.

What is a Good GPA?

A GPA of 3.0 (B average) is generally considered satisfactory. A GPA above 3.5 is strong and qualifies for Dean's List at many institutions. Graduate school admissions typically require a 3.0 or higher, while competitive programs often expect 3.5+.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is GPA calculated?
GPA is a weighted average of your grade points. Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, sum all the results, then divide by the total credit hours. For example: an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course = (12 + 12) ÷ 7 = 3.43 GPA.
What is the 4.0 GPA scale?
The standard 4.0 scale assigns: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. Some schools use a simpler scale without + and − grades.
What is a good GPA?
Generally, 3.5–4.0 is considered excellent, 3.0–3.49 is good, 2.5–2.99 is satisfactory, and below 2.0 may put you on academic probation at many institutions. For competitive graduate programs or scholarships, 3.5+ is often expected.
What is the difference between GPA and cumulative GPA?
GPA can refer to a single semester's grade average. Cumulative GPA (CGPA) is the overall average across all semesters and all courses completed to date. Most transcripts and job applications ask for cumulative GPA.
Do all courses count equally toward GPA?
No — courses are weighted by credit hours. A 4-credit course has twice the impact on your GPA as a 2-credit course. This is why getting a high grade in high-credit courses matters more for your overall GPA.
How do I raise my GPA?
Because GPA is a weighted average, improving grades in high-credit courses has the greatest impact. Grade replacement (retaking a course for a higher grade) is allowed at some schools. The more credits you have already completed, the harder it becomes to move your cumulative GPA significantly.
