Square Footage Calculator

Calculate the square footage of a room or space from its length and width. Add multiple rooms and get the total.

Our free square footage calculator works out the area of a room or space from its length and width. You can add multiple rooms to calculate the total square footage of an entire home or floor plan.

How to calculate square footage

Measure the length and width of the space in feet, then multiply them together.

Square footage = length (ft) × width (ft)

For example, a room that is 12 ft long and 10 ft wide has a square footage of 12 × 10 = 120 sq ft.

How to calculate square footage from inches

If your measurements are in inches, divide each by 12 to convert to feet before multiplying. For example, 144 inches × 120 inches = 12 ft × 10 ft = 120 sq ft.

How to calculate square footage of a house

Measure each room separately and add the results together. Only include finished, liveable space — exclude garages, unfinished basements, and exterior walls. Use the "Add another room" button above to total multiple rooms at once.

Square feet to square metres

To convert square feet to square metres, multiply by 0.0929. For example, 120 sq ft × 0.0929 = 11.15 m².

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate square footage?
Multiply the length by the width of the space. For a room that is 15 ft long and 12 ft wide: 15 × 12 = 180 sq ft. Make sure both measurements are in the same unit before multiplying.
How do I calculate square footage from inches?
Measure length and width in inches, multiply to get square inches, then divide by 144 to convert to square feet (since 1 sq ft = 144 sq in). For example, 90 in × 72 in = 6,480 sq in ÷ 144 = 45 sq ft.
How do I calculate the square footage of an entire house?
Measure each room separately, calculate each room's square footage (length × width), then add all rooms together. Exclude areas like closets if they are counted separately, or include them based on how your local real estate convention defines livable space.
How much flooring do I need for a room?
Calculate the square footage of the room, then add 10–15% for waste from cuts, fitting, and any damaged pieces. For example, a 200 sq ft room: buy at least 220–230 sq ft of flooring. Ceramic tile and patterned materials may need more waste allowance.
What is the difference between square footage and square meters?
Square footage is the imperial measure (US). Square meters is the metric measure (most of the world). 1 square meter = approximately 10.764 square feet. To convert sq ft to sq m, divide by 10.764. To convert sq m to sq ft, multiply by 10.764.
How do I calculate square footage of an irregular room?
Divide the irregular room into rectangular sections, calculate the area of each section separately, then add them together. For example, an L-shaped room can be split into two rectangles. This decomposition method works for any non-rectangular space.
